D & G Short was formed in 1962 by Dennis and Gwen Short as horticultural suppliers and after a few years started selling paint and decorating materials for the DIY trade. Over the years the business quietly prospered and in 1965 Barry Short joined his Mother and Father in the family business. Gradually the horticultural side of the business was fazed out with the trend for large garden centres and the DIY and hardware were concentrated on.

In 1973 Ruth Short joined the business to run the accounts and help in the shop. In 1979 Dennis and Gwen retired and in 1985 Chris Short joined the family business.

By 1988 Chris has started the Locksmith side of the business from requests by customers for someone to fit locks for them. This side of the business gradually grew to become a separate department encompassing not just general locksmith work but all aspects of security.

At the moment 4 staff are employed to run the retail shop under Barry's management along with Chris running the security side of the business and Ruth looking after the accounts.
